Introduction
Hello! My name is Michael. I write software for my job, and I enjoy self-hosting as a hobby. I do some other stuff too, but you don’t care about that right now. Maybe I’ll tell you someday, if you’re good.
About this blog
I created this blog as a sort of personal diary/repository of knowledge. It’s divided into two categories: personal and technical.
The technical category is to document the various things I have set up in my homelab or software I’ve developed. I’ve been at this self-hosting thing for so long that I’ve started to forget how I’ve set things up originally, so when things break I can’t remember how to fix them. It’s a very bad habit, and I’m trying to fix it by documenting things now as they come up. I can refer back to my notes here if I need to set up something again or remember how I set it up in the first place.
The personal category is more for notes from my personal life that I want to share with others. Not necessarily everyone else; each post might only appeal to a single other person, but if it’s on a blog I can easily share it with that one person. If you happen to like what you see, well that’s fantastic. I’m so happy for you.
You can click on Categories at the top of the page to see the two categories, and clicking one of them will show you only posts in that category. You’re most likely only going to be interested in one of them, so bookmark the category page you’re interested and you’ll never have to see the other boring stuff. Each category also has its own RSS feed, so you can subscribe to just that category and see only those posts.
In addition to the two big categories, posts are also tagged by topic in case some things interest you more than others. Personal posts make use of this the most. I’m planning on starting a series of posts about reality TV, but there’ll be some silly personal stories and some life updates as those happen as well. So if you don’t want to see everything being vomited into the personal category, you can browse by tag. Tags also have their own RSS feeds as well, so you can get really granular with tuning me out.
A personal note
Look, I’m almost positive I’m going to abandon this whole project in a week. I’m 99.999% certain that if you’re reading this right now, there’s going to be five blog posts from eight years ago on this website. And that’s okay. I’m okay with that. The important thing is that I tried something new. I learned something from this entire experience, probably. Maybe you’ll find entertainment or information in one of those blog posts from eight years ago. Wouldn’t that be cool! Maybe this entire thing will collapse in a week. Who knows? That’s the fun part of it.
If you have feedback about this blog, I suggest screaming it into a pillow. Or mailing your congressperson. Perhaps call your mom and talk about it. It’s the Internet; I don’t want to dox myself by just plastering my personal info all over this blog in some vain attempt at fame and fortune. Maybe I’ll link to my fediverse account at some point. Wouldn’t that be fun? It gets spicy there. Sometimes. Maybe. I’ve said too much.
